Hello, I’m Alyssa, a 9th grade Earth Science teacher.
I love metamorphic rocks and that giant sloth in my photo. I am passionate about teaching and bringing teachers together. I found this passion after hitting rock bottom as a teacher and finding a way to come back strong and wholehearted for my students and myself. I would like to see all teachers thriving on the day-to-day work of teaching instead of mired in stress and survival mode.
MrsGeology is about providing resources, support, and community to teachers so they can find ways to make teaching rewarding, joyful and viable. MrsGeology is here to welcome and engage educators and celebrate the successes that too often go unrecognized. Hence, we are a teacher-centered community.
I cannot tell you in good conscience that I am certain teaching is a sustainable career, but I want it to be. I understand the inner conflict between the perfect lesson plan, sitting down to eat dinner together, the search for the light-bulb moment, and finding time to read a book (from start to finish). I want you to get the most out of your time with your students and the most of of your time outside of school; let’s find that ever elusive “balance”.
Balance is still a work in progress for my family. I am looking for ways to be more efficient and thoughtful in my classroom than ever before, while also spending time on myself and with my husband. I have focused on the wrong goals in the past, like formatting or the perfect evaluation, and I’m working to focus on my students and their learning (which is sometimes harder than it sounds), and my own well-being.
I think I may have figured things out pretty early on and after some soul searching I’m coming full circle; I want to have my cake and eat it too. I can have my cake and eat it too.
